Yesterday, I spoke to the wonderful Kerrie Curtis, mother of Isabella Curtis: a fifteen year old girl with Asperger’s Syndrome who’s school has banned her from going to a four week animal immersion trip to Africa purely on the basis of her diagnosis. Isabella’s school, Brighton Secondary college in Melbourne, believes that she may pose a potential threat due to her diagnosis. What the school has overlooked, however, is the fact that Isabelle Curtis is a highly capable young woman: she is a Girl Guide, and she has volunteered for animal services and as a lifesaver. Brighton Secondary has made incorrect assumptions about Isabella purely on the basis on her diagnosis. This is pure discrimination
